Recently Nanguang Power has completed a worldwide creative & initiative reconstruction project for Liuzhou Steel and Iron Company, which has successfully converted the Frame 5 gas turbine to COG user. Under the staff¡¯s hard work, the unit has been successfully operating for 72 hours. The smooth conversion between oil/gas and COG is welcomed by the owner.
Liuzhou Steel and Iron Company used to have more than 20,000 cubic meters of COG, which couldn¡¯t be recyclable effectively and has to be released to the air resulting in a great waste and serious pollution. While Liuzhou Zhenxing Electric Power Co., Ltd. (briefly known as Liuzhou Power), which is less than 2 kilometers distant from Liuzhou Steel and Iron Company, possessed PG5361P gas turbine unit introduced from John Brown in 1989, the fuel of which is distillate diesel only. In 1998, Liuzhou Power added HRSG and 1x12 MW steam turbine generator to combine cycle and put to grid for power generation in September the same year. This combination has only operated for only 544 peak hours. Due to the oil price appreciation and alleviation of lack of power, this combined cycle unit has ceased to run since 1994. The two companies thus presented one question to Nanguang Power, and the question is the possibility of combination of these two companies for a shared usage of COG to generate power.
There is no example to use COG for the same type of unit. It is very dangerous for operation, for the heat value of COG is only half that of natural gas and contains much hydrogen,. The key problem is that whether or not the unit can burn the COG safely and generate the rated power. For a confirmed conclusion, Our company leaders attached much importance to this problem and immediately organized the experts to make the relevant researches, which included analysis and calculation of COG¡¯s ingredients, the structure of Frame 5 unit, the gas flow as well as any possible phenomenon while burning.
In spite of no example for reference, our company leaders mobilized the best team for installation and adjustment. It took about two months to complete the offline adjustment and the conversion project. 29 Jan. 2008 is the day for the online adjustment. Our unit team made several return trips to Liuzhou for some irrelevant factors. With the help of owner and the concerning parties, all the project finished on 29 April, 2008. After running of 18 MW and 19.5 MW, the testing result is satisfactory, therefore the first project in China on COG was completed and officially put into commercial operation on 13 May, 2008. The success of the above-mentioned project has actually extended the GT application of a gas turbine and also provided new effective ways in an integrated usage of energy, control of pollutants, increase of economic benefits as well in technology and equipment. As a matter of fact, It has also set up a good example for energy recycling, effective usage of power generated and environmental friendliness. And we strongly believe that this mode will be well developed in China in the future.
